McGregors bring down curtain on surfski series in style

The husband-and-wife duo of Hank and Pippa McGregor combined to take overall line honours in the Fenn Challenge, the seventh and final race of the Chalupsky Properties Surfski Series on Friday night.

The Ballito-based Euro Steel crew upstaged all the singles and doubles crews on a drizzly and overcast evening at Marine SLC, as the popular Friday night summer surfski dice series came to a close.

The McGregors came home to claim the bragging rights by over thirty seconds from the father-and-son crew of Colin and Josh Simpkins, with the emerging Siyaphambili duo of Kwanele Banda and Lungelo Gumede racing onto the last spot on the podium.

“I thoroughly enjoy paddling with Pippa,” said Hank McGregor. “We have been paddling together for years and to go and do a Friday night race together starts off the weekend on a high.

“The conditions were pretty tame but the headwind made it quite tough on the return leg,” he said.

“We had to dig deep and managed to open up a gap after the first lap and just held that for the second lap to take the overall win,” said the Fenn/Euro Steel ace.

In the singles division that usually hosts the elite racers, but was somewhat depleted on the night by the absence of several big names competing at the national surf-lifesaving championships in the Eastern Cape, Bryce Lawson grabbed the spoils from Steve Cohen and Marc Holtzhausen.

Jenna Nisbet took full advantage of the fixture to grab full points in the women’s division, racing to an impressive seventh place overall in the singles division.

The short course race that attracts many novices to the Friday night series, was won by the double ski crew of David Glassom and Kevin Duke from the Laila Maher and Josh Van Den Bergh pairing, with Keith Ward in his single ski in third.

The final series standing will be released early in the new week.
